Connecting Your Smartphone to the 2018 Honda Accord
May 14 2018 - King.tegna@gmail.com
Seventy-seven percent of all Americans own a smartphone of some kind.1 Of these owners, a whopping 46 percent say they “couldn’t live without” their phone.2 Honda has taken that information into account, which is why it’s now easier than ever to connect your smartphone to the new 2018 Honda Accord.

Androids

Both Androids and iPhones are compatible with the new Accord. Connecting your Android is simple and should come easily to anyone who uses their phone on a regular basis.
  1. Download the free Android Auto™ app from the Google Play Store, which is accessible through your phone.
  2. Plug your phone into the USB Smartphone/Audio Interface outlet located under the climate controls or in the center console compartment (available in some trims).
  3. A message should pop up on the Display Audio touchscreen. Touch “Enable” to accept the terms and conditions, and click the check box if you want the Accord to remember your choice.
  4. Go through the tutorial to finish setting up the connection before you hit the road.
  5. You will now notice that a new “Android Auto” square has appeared on the touchscreen. Tap it to use your apps.
  6. If you’d like hands-free access to an app, press and hold the TALK button on the left-hand side of your steering wheel, which looks like a mouth with lines coming out of it.
  7. Initiate the Talk to Google™ technology by saying “Ok Google” and telling the car what you’d like it to do.
  8. Press the TALK button once more to stop Talk to Google.
Android Auto is compatible with a whole range of apps. Drivers and passengers can use it to listen to music or audiobooks, follow navigation directions, call, text or email people and much more.

iPhones

The process for connecting an iPhone is nearly identical to the process for connecting an Android.
  1. All recently released iPhones, starting with the iPhone 5, should automatically have Apple CarPlay™ capability.
    • Note: If CarPlay is not working at this point, make sure you have installed the latest iOS update on your phone. You must have iOS 7.1 or a later version for CarPlay to work.
  4. You will now notice that a new “Apple CarPlay” square has appeared on the touchscreen. Tap it to use your apps.
  5. Your apps will be arranged on the touchscreen just like they are on your phone. You will notice a “Honda” icon. Tap this if you would like to return to the Display Audio home screen.
    • Note: If you would like to change the layout of the apps, you can do so through your iPhone’s settings.
  6. If you’d like hands-free access to an app, press and hold the TALK button on the left-hand side of your steering wheel, which looks like a mouth with lines coming out of it.
  7. Siri® should indicate that she is ready to talk. You can now tell Siri what app you’d like to use.
  8. Press the TALK button once more to stop talking to Siri.
CarPlay allows many of the same functions as Android Auto, such as listening to music and audiobooks, communicating with others by phone, text or email and asking for the weather or movie times.

Bluetooth®

If you don’t want to fumble with USB cords, you have the option to pair your smartphone to the Accord using Bluetooth. There are two ways to do this:

Option #1

  1. Go to your phone’s settings and turn Bluetooth on. Make sure your phone is discoverable.
  2. In the Touring trim, locate the Near Field Communication (NFC) symbol on your dashboard. It should look like a silver “N.”
  3. If your smartphone is NFC compatible, gently tap the back of the phone to the symbol.
  4. A message should pop up on your Display Audio touchscreen. Select “Connect Device to Vehicle Bluetooth.”
  5. Tap the phone to the symbol once more.
  6. A pairing request should appear on your phone. Click “Yes” or “OK” to accept.

Option #2

  1. Go to your phone’s settings and turn Bluetooth on. Make sure your phone is discoverable.
  2. Touch the “Phone” icon on your Display Audio touchscreen./
  3. Select “Settings,” then “Change Devices,” then “Connect New Device.” Click “OK” if a reminder message pops up on the screen.
  4. Your phone’s description should have populated on this screen. Select the button that displays your phone’s name.
  5. A pairing code will appear on your smartphone screen. Accept the pairing request if the code matches the one on the Display Audio touchscreen.
  6. After pairing, the touchscreen will give you the option to allow audio and phone functions. Click the checkboxes next to both “Audio” and “Phone” for full functionality. Hit “Save.”
  7. One last message may appear on your phone requesting permission to import contacts or allow HandsFreeLink®. This technology lets you call people hands-free while driving. Accept the request if you want to enable this function.
