Driving a hybrid car has many established advantages, such as increased fuel economy, energy conservation and reduced fuel dependence. Plug-in and conventional hybrid owners also often take pride in contributing to a healthier environment for future generations.
But not all drivers realize that owning certain models, such as the Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, also qualifies them for federal tax benefits, like the Qualified Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV) Tax Credit. Here is more information about this and other incentives available to Honda owners and how they work.
What is the PEV Tax Credit?
The Qualified PEV Tax Credit offers a minimum $2,500 and a maximum $7,500 tax credit for each new qualifying electric vehicle purchased in the U.S after January 1, 2010. As of January 2018, more than 25 all-electric and plug-in models qualify, including the Plug-In Clarity.

- Battery capacity of at least five kilowatt-hours
- External source of energy to recharge the battery
- Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of up to 14,000 pounds
- Meets specific emission standards
- It does not typically apply when leasing
- It does not apply to a vehicle purchased solely for resale
- The vehicle must be made by a qualified manufacturer, such as Honda

- 14,001 to 26,500 pounds: $50,000
